Anthony Maschmedt, principal of Dwell Development and Tadashi Shiga, a Washington State 3^rd party certifier and principal of Evergreen Certified were on KING5’s New Day Northwest today, showing the differences in energy efficiencies and cost savings between a home built to code compared to a home built to Dwell Development standards.  They had two 6’x6’ walls for comparison on set, one built to code and one to Dwell Development specs.

Anthony talked about the importance of triple glazed windows – he chooses Atrium Windows and Doors which are distributed by Medallion Industries.    Medallion’s been providing quality windows, doors and millwork in the Pacific NW and California for over 40 years.  Atrium is actually building a Passive window to go into Dwell Development Passive House homes–more about this exciting new development below.  Tadashi elaborated on several other key points about cost savings gained by an energy efficient home:

“Operational costs should never be underplayed when buying a home. Using high-efficiency features, we achieve dramatically lower annual utility savings without compromising on the beauty and functionality of a home. These homes are built to a high standard that is verifiable through systems like Built Green, Passive House US, and NW Energy Star, so homeowners can buy with absolute confidence that they’re going to pay less for utilities from year to year compared to a code-built home. We even put our Evergreen Home Score label on these properties so homeowners can determine – at a glance – how much smaller their utility bills will be, including electricity, heating, sewer, and water costs. Built Green has selected Dwell Development’s Rainier Vista micro-community as their featured project for January!

As part of their communications efforts, BuiltGreen, a non-profit, residential building program of the Master Builders Association publishes a monthly newsletter, selecting a project for each issue that meets the high standards and goals they’d like builders to aspire towards.

In the January issue, the cover story features Dwell Development’s 4 unit micro-community at Columbia Station in Rainier Vista.  This micro-community will grow to 15 units of affordable  housing and are cited as “great example(s) of 5-Star green building and design at an accessible price point.”

December, 2011:  Dwell Development Founder Anthony Maschmedt and Architect Julian Weber, AIA  checking out the energy sealing behind the walls.

Seams and joints are caulked with EcoSeal and ceilings coated with spray foam prior to packing the walls, ceilings and floors with Green certified insulation.

February 7th, 2012:  We’re less than 60 days from completion!  Sheet rock and paint are in.  Now the fun part–the home stretch.  Cabinates arrive this week at 2140 E. Pine.

Foundation is in and slab is poured at 4318 S. Ferdinand.  We’re waiting for the framing panels.  There’s still time to lock into a pre-sale on this high style modern view home!

Feb 22:

first floor is framed, and we waited for the framing panels to arrive…

then…Ferdinand main floor walls built and shipping now:

and then…panels arrived and within 48 hours the second level is nearly installed!

March 2011:

The second floor was up by March 1st and interior framing has begun.

 …and the third floor was in by March 5th.

Next step is window install, roof top deck and roof.
