BASF goes above and beyond code with the new BEYOND initiative

Today we aired our latest segment on KING5′s New Day Northwest with Margaret Larson, featuring BEYOND, an initiative focused on increasing energy efficiencies in residential homes by BASF.

The program, launched earlier this year by the BASF Center for Building Excellence is offered to builders  of sustainable residential construction, such as Dwell Development, to construct homes that outperform conventional code-built homes.  When built to the BEYOND requirements, homes must achieve a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index score of 50 or lower, which means it requires at least 50 percent less energy than a home built to conventional code-built home.  This program offers a five-year limited guarantee on heating and cooling energy use and comfort as provided through the Environments For Living program by Masco Home Services, Inc.

This is a match made in heaven as BASF’s BEYOND initiative is completely in sync with Dwell Development’s vision and goals-to increase the construction of homes that are sustainable, go beyond code and are still affordable, measurable and provide lasting value.  “We’ve been meeting these sustainable building practices in the past and it’s great now to have our standards acknowledged through this program”, said Anthony Maschmedt, princpal of Dwell Development.”  To learn more about BASF’s BEYOND Applied Building Science program click here.

To demonstrate how Dwell Development meets standards set by programs such as BEYOND, Anthony was joined on the show by Tadashi Shiga of Evergreen Certified who provide third-party certification services for green building projects. Together, on set, they conducted a blower door test which is how a home’s  airtightness is determined.  We also had updates on the progress of Habitat for Humanity’s House of the Immediate Future being built at the Seattle Center, which will be moved to our Columbia Station Phase 4 micro-community later this year.  Anthony also shared progress of our Passive House (see image below) which will be adjacent to the relocated home.

Windermere Real Estate Northwest sponsor Dwell Development on KING5′s New Day Northwest!

Windermere Real Estate Northwest sponsors Dwell Development on KING5′s New Day Northwest!

Today we aired our latest segment on KING5′s New Day Northwest with Margaret Larson, focusing on the theme of community.  For Dwell Development, community is a core value tied to the sustainable lifestyles present in our development at Rainier Vista/Columbia Station in the Columbia City neighborhood.  That’s why we are continuing to build there and will be expanding by way of additional micro-communities at this location.  Principal Anthony Maschmedt lives and raises his family in Columbia City and thinks its a neighborhood which underscores the philosophy of an energy efficient home, extending sustainability beyond the house itself to how we live, work and play and stay connected to our community.

Our real estate partner Windermere Real Estate Northwest, who sponsored the segment, share in this value.  We had the pleasure of hearing from Joe Easterday, Managing Broker Windermere Northwest - Mount Baker Office.  Joe shared with us that tomorrow (June 15th) is the 28th annual Community Service Day for Windermere and its agents, and that this year their office is painting out graffiti on buildings.  Ted Dietz and Sabranie Coyne, both of the Mount Baker Office and who also live in the neighborhood, will be joining forces with Jonathan Savage and Susan Stasik as our sales force expands.

Joe also shared with the audience that Windermere also supports local organizations throughout the year, including Treehouse, Rainier Valley Food Bank, Little League and Southeast Seattle schools.  Since 1989 the Windermere Foundation has donated over $22 million to programs that supports low-income and homeless families. And, every time a Windermere agent sells a home, a portion of the commission goes to the Foundation.

We also covered the latest updates about the House of The Immediate Future, an all volunteer project by Habitat For Humanity Seattle/South King County that is being built at the Seattle Center in honor of the 50 year celebration of the Seattle World’s Fair.  This project is in collaboration with The Miller Hull Partnership and Dwell Development -  The House of the Immediate Future will make its permanent home this Fall at Dwell Development’s Columbia City 15 home micro-community in the New Rainier Vista.  Here’s a picture of where the home will be placed:

The house will be situated adjacent to the first in-fill spec Passive House in Washington State, at Columbia Station Phase 4!  Learn more at Habitat For Humanity Seattle/South King County’s Facebook page and to see the segment which aired today, click here!

Code VS Dwell Development Cost Savings

Anthony Maschmedt, principal of Dwell Development and Tadashi Shiga, a Washington State 3rd party certifier and principal of Evergreen Certified were on KING5’s New Day Northwest today, showing the differences in energy efficiencies and cost savings between a home built to code compared to a home built to Dwell Development standards.  They had two 6’x6’ walls for comparison on set, one built to code and one to Dwell Development specs.

Anthony talked about the importance of triple glazed windows – he chooses Atrium Windows and Doors which are distributed by Medallion Industries.    Medallion’s been providing quality windows, doors and millwork in the Pacific NW and California for over 40 years.  Atrium is actually building a Passive window to go into Dwell Development Passive House homes-more about this exciting new development below.  Tadashi elaborated on several other key points about cost savings gained by an energy efficient home:

“Operational costs should never be underplayed when buying a home. Using high-efficiency features, we achieve dramatically lower annual utility savings without compromising on the beauty and functionality of a home. These homes are built to a high standard that is verifiable through systems like Built Green, Passive House US, and NW Energy Star, so homeowners can buy with absolute confidence that they’re going to pay less for utilities from year to year compared to a code-built home. We even put our Evergreen Home Score label on these properties so homeowners can determine – at a glance – how much smaller their utility bills will be, including electricity, heating, sewer, and water costs. We’re working to make it super simple for homeowners to see just how valuable a green home can be over the long term.”

As Dwell Development is building the first infill spec Passive House in Washington State, set to complete early 2013, they are setting the bar even higher as this uber-efficient category of home will become the new Dwell Development standard.  Shiga is currently the only certifier in Washington state qualified to certify Passive House.  We’d like to thank our segment sponsor Medallion Industries and Atrium Windows and Doors, and also Moultonology for supplying the audience with our gift of a sample of their awesome edible flower and Italian herb seed bombs.  Here are the full packages you can buy on their website:
